There’s something about spring cleaning that makes us want to throw open the windows, let the sunshine in and give our homes a fresh start. After months of closed windows, cosy evenings and spending more time indoors, spring is the perfect opportunity to look at your home with fresh eyes. Not necessarily because everything needs cleaning from top to bottom, but because there are always a few jobs that get quietly overlooked during the regular routine. Spring cleaning is your chance to reset those details and get your home ready for the lighter, brighter months ahead.
Start your spring cleaning with the places you don’t usually notice
Regular cleaning keeps your home looking and feeling cared for, but there are some areas that simply don’t need attention every week. Think about the tops of doors and picture frames, skirting boards, light fittings, ceiling fans and the spaces behind and underneath furniture. These are the jobs that make a noticeable difference once they’re done, even if you don’t consciously notice them beforehand – that’s where a deep spring cleaning day can give your home the ultimate refresh.
Spring is also a good time to look at your windows and window tracks. As the days become brighter, clean glass can make a surprisingly big difference to how much light comes into your home.

Give your kitchen a spring cleaning reset
Your kitchen works hard all year, so spring is a good time to give some attention to the areas beyond the everyday wipe-down. Cabinet fronts, splashbacks, the tops of appliances and cooker hood filters can all benefit from a little extra care. Grab yourself some steps and clean the top of edges of your cabinet doors – you’ll be amazed at the grease build up in those forgotten, out-of-reach places. Inside the fridge is another good one. Emptying the shelves, giving them a thorough clean and putting everything back neatly can make the whole kitchen feel refreshed. It’s also worth pulling out the fridge as the tight spaces between the fridge and the cabinets – and the motor at the very back build up an unholy amount of dust balls. Finally, don’t forget those little places that are easy to overlook, such as handles, seals, edges and the many little nooks that harbour grime in your appliances. And why not reward yourself for a job well done, by adding some fresh spring flowers to brighten up the space?
Give your bathroom a spring cleaning fresh start
Bathrooms are another area where a seasonal spring cleaning reset can make a real difference. Start by clearing out your vanity and bathroom cabinets, getting rid of anything that has expired or is no longer being used, then give the shelves, drawers and storage areas a thorough clean before putting everything back in an organised way. While everything is out, take a good look at the room itself. Are your towels looking a little tired? Could a new bath mat, soap dispenser or a few simple bathroom accessories give the space a fresh feel for spring? You don’t need to renovate to make a bathroom feel new again. Sometimes a little editing and a few thoughtful changes are all it takes.
Spring is also a good time to pay particular attention to grout. Over time, grout can lose its fresh appearance, particularly in showers and around baths. For a deeper clean, use a suitable grout cleaner or make a paste with bicarbonate of soda and water, apply it to the grout lines and leave it for a few minutes before gently scrubbing with a small grout brush or old toothbrush. Rinse thoroughly afterwards and allow the area to dry completely. Always check that your chosen method is suitable for your particular tiles and grout first. And don’t forget the less obvious areas: behind taps, around the base of the toilet, shower door tracks, cabinet handles and the edges where different surfaces meet. These are the little details that can make a bathroom feel beautifully refreshed.
A spring cleaning refresh for bedrooms and living spaces
Spring is a lovely time to think about the things that make your home feel comfortable. Spring cleaning means washing and air bedding, freshening cushions and throws, and giving rugs and upholstered furniture some extra attention. If your curtains can be washed, this can also be a good seasonal job. You might also find that simply rearranging a few things or putting away heavier winter items and bringing lighter, cooler fabrics and colour highlights, can make a room feel brighter and more open. This doesn’t need to become a major decluttering exercise. Sometimes a little editing is enough.

Make the most of your outdoor spaces
Start at the front door. While spring cleaning, it’s a good opportunity to look at your home from a visitor’s perspective. Step outside, walk away from the house, then turn around and take an objective look at your front door and entryway. When you see something every day, it’s remarkably easy to stop noticing it. The front door might need a good clean, the doormat may have seen better days, outdoor lights might need attention, or the front path and porch could benefit from a little TLC. Even small details such as fingerprints around the door handle, cobwebs in corners, dusty light fittings or tired-looking pot plants can make a difference. Take a few minutes to look at your home with fresh eyes and make a note of anything you’ve stopped seeing. Your entryway is the first impression of your home, so it’s worth making it feel welcoming.
Then turn your attention to the back of the house – and don’t forget any side paths – especially if you will be welcoming guests – no point in having your front and back of house in order and looking pristine, but having your visitors walk down a neglected side passage to get there.
One of the nicest things about spring is that we start living outside again. So don’t forget about your outdoor space in your spring cleaning mission. Before the first long lunch or afternoon gathering, take a look at your outdoor spaces. Give outdoor furniture a clean, refresh cushions and sweep and wash patios, balconies and entertaining areas. And don’t forget the glass doors and windows that connect your indoor and outdoor spaces. Clean glass makes the transition between the two feel almost seamless. And not to mention, welcoming in all that lovely spring sunshine.
